Tinto De Invierno – Spiced Wine Hot Toddy Recipe

Tinto de Invierno-Spiced Red Wine Hot Toddy Recipe

tinto-de-invierno-spiced-wine-hot-toddyTinto De Invierno Spiced Wine Hot Toddy RecipeTinto De Invierno Spiced Wine Hot Toddy- The best hot toddy recipe I’ve ever had. I know, I’m bragging, but it truly is fucking fantastic. It was another one those days I started perfecting a cocktail recipe and ended up unconscious before the sun went down…Of course, you should always drink responsibly, advice I should take more often.

My inspiration for this fantastic hot toddy recipe is two fold. One stems from a day I was looking at weird things people used to eat and drink in the 50s and 60s and the other comes from researching Spanish cocktails for a new bar I’m creating a cocktail menu for.

The main idea for the cocktail comes from a Spanish drink called Tinto de Verano, which translates to “red wine of summer”. The Spanish, like many Europeans, are champion drinkers. They drink with every meal, after meals, before meals, and basically anytime their hands are free.

They’re not knocking back shots of whiskey like we (okay, I) do though, they tend to drink lower alcohol cocktails so that they can keep the drinking train going all day long. Tinto de Verano is a refreshing cocktail of red wine and Sprite (or whatever the Spanish equivalent is).

It’s winter where I’m at though, so I wanted a warm drink. I was never a huge fan of mulled wine (spiced wine served warm) so I turned to the Hot Toddy, king of the warm winter cocktails.

I immediately decided to make a red wine flavored honey to use in my Hot Toddy recipe, but it needed something more. This is where my second inspiration came in. When browsing weird drinking/eating habits of days gone by I stumbled upon an ad for “Hot Dr.Pepper”. It’s literally just Dr.Pepper warmed up and served with a lemon. It sounded sickly sweet and kinda gross, so obviously I had to try it.

Hot Dr.Pepper: It's "different"
Never trust an drink ad that can only describe itself as “different”.

Unsurprisingly I was right. The spice flavors of Dr.Pepper are on point though, so I figured I’d use their carefully crafted recipe to spice up my own and make the best hot toddy recipe ever.

This recipe easily batches out, just keep a kettle of warm water and these spiced wine hot toddies can be dolled out quickly and easily making it one of the best warm holiday cocktail recipes. I called this Hot Toddy variation “Tinto de Invierno”, red wine of winter, in honor of the Spanish drink I was inspired by.Tinto de Invierno-Spiced Red Wine Hot Toddy Recipe
